Want to become a voiceover talent?

I use a MAC so I have an Apollo Twin interface that is specific to MAC users. (they do have certain ones for PC) Super easy to set-up and use.

My editing software is Reaper. Created by a radio production guy. Easy to use and cheap. He will give it away for free but I paid as he should make money.

In addition to soundproofing on my walls, I have a GIK Acoustic Vocal Booth.

My mic is a Nova M-Audio. But I have a back-up Rode NT2.

Other than the vocal booth, I’ve bought all my equipment from Sweetwater and always recommend them to friends. When you know what you want or need, email michael_bradac@sweetwater.com and he’ll help you. Good dude. I’ve been ordering stuff from him for over 20 years.

I use Source Connect for directed sessions. The quality is terrific.

I used to get national and regional work on Voice123 and Voices. I paid the yearly fee and had access to auditions. My first national with American Family Insurance came from Voice123. All that TV infomercial stuff came from Voices.

During Covid, anyone with a recording app on a smartphone signed up and by the time I went to audition, 200 people beat me to it. So I quit using pay to play sites in 2022. I still have profiles listed but hadn’t paid for years. In 2025 I paid to renew my Voice123 but only audition for select projects with the right budget. I got a job with Goodyear and a few others so it paid for itself.

I did have agents but don’t currently. When I was with Big Fish and Big Mouth Talent I was the one getting the big jobs from the audition sites, not from them. They sent me auditions but I never landed anything except Children’s Miracle Network through Big Fish in Colorado.

I hear from Becky at VoiceScouts from time to time. Just got work from her. She and I know each other from our Indianapolis days. Then she moved from Atlanta to the Raleigh area when I was living in Charlotte. My demo is on her site.

Speaking of Charlotte, if you need a demo, contact Groundcrew Sound. John, Ross and the gang are incredible people who happen to be incredibly talented. My demo is on their site and I do get at least once job per year from them.

I will tell you that things are really tough right now for voice talent because of AI but not impossible. Whatever you do, DO NOT audition for anything labeled TTS or AI. And never sell yourself short. If the rate quoted is too low don’t audition. For example, an audiobook should pay at least $500 per finished hour. Most audiobooks are between 8 and 12 hours long. On occasion you’ll get asked to voice an audio book for $300. These people are crazy but the sad part is, someone will feel desperate enough to agree to it. Side note, I do not do audiobooks! They are too time consuming. Good luck to you. Reach out if you have questions.
